Summer Fishing Fun in Southern California

Family fishing at the Seal Beach Youth Fishing Derby in 2011.

Want something fun to do this summer that is free and always a unique experience? Take your family fishing at one of several youth fishing events in August! These pier fishing events are open to children ages 4 through 15 and can be an ocean adventure for the entire family. You never know what you might catch or see.

Here are the summer events:

August 1
62nd Annual Kid’s Fishing Rodeo
Belmont Pier
Long Beach

August 16
51st Annual Huck Finn Fishing Derby
Huntington Beach Pier

August 23
22nd Annual Seal Beach Fishing Derby
Seal Beach Pier

All youth events have a limited number of fishing rods available on loan for the day. Free bait is provided to participants and prizes will be awarded for the largest fish, the smallest fish, or other fun categories. At the Huck Finn Fishing Derby on the Huntington Beach Pier, participants dress up as Huck Finn or Becky Thatcher and win prizes for best costume. Try your luck at one of these fun summer events and enjoy a beautiful day by the ocean!

Before you go fishing, remember these safe fishing tips below. Also, check out the Fish Contamination Education Collaborative website to learn more about California Fishing and what fish are commonly caught from the piers.

Safe Fishing Tips

  1. Look for signs on piers or posts telling you which fish are not safe to eat in a particular area.
  2. Eat only the filet of the fish throwing away the head, guts, and skin.
  3. Grill fish when cooking so that the contaminants drip away with the fish oils.
  4. Learn which fish are safe to eat since they are nutritious and healthy for you!

Also, while you are at any of these events stop by the Montrose Settlements Restoration Program information booth and play one of our fun educational games. Everyone wins a prize for playing.

Hope to see you this summer. ..!
